Dr. Timothy McHenryTrigger Point Dry Needling

Trigger Point Dry Needling is a remarkable new therapy that often brings dramatic and effective relief for chronic pain.

What is TrP dry needling? It sounds rather strange, but is actually straightforward and easy to explain.

For some time, one well known treatment for chronic pain has been "trigger point injection therapy."  A trigger point is simply an irritable spot, often in a skeletal muscle.  The injection was a local anesthetic, saline, or a corticosteroid.  Practitioners have long been taught that the precision of the injection was key in providing relief.

Trigger Point "Dry Needling" simply refers to the discovery that the same relief can often be achieved without injecting any substance - a simple physical needle is often enough to deactivate the pain associated with trigger points.

Dry NeedlingIt's NOT Acupuncture!

TrP Dry Needling looks like acupuncture, but it's not.  Where acupuncture is about placing needles along certain meridians of energy flow in the body,  TrP dry needling is the direct intervention of a trigger point using an acupuncture needle.  Its primary goal is to desensitize supersensitive structures, to restore motion and function, and possibly induce a healing response.

Try TrP Dry Needling Before Surgery!

We've all heard of patients with back pain who have had back surgery or surgery to fuse discs, only to find the pain has returned.  Before considering surgery, consult with One on 1 Physical Therapy about dry needling.

Your pain may be caused by trigger points - essentially contracted muscles that can refer pain throughout the body.  Dry needling helps release these shortened muscles, mechanically disrupting the dysfunctional muscle and promoting healing.

Electrical Stimulation

In some cases, high frequency electrical stimulation can be added to dry needling to help with the treatment and management of chronic myofascial pain syndrome.

Myofascial pain refers to a neuropathic injury or disease appearing in the musculoskeletal system.  These syndromes can often arise without any detectable injury or inflammation, with patients visiting therapist after therapist and never achieving the relief they seek.

When electrical stimulation is combined with dry needling, sometimes dramatic and long-lasting effects can be achieved.  Certainly the simple and fast nature of treatment offers dry needling a place in the vanguard of treatments for chronic pain.

Clean Needle Techniques Rigorously Observed

Because dry needling is the penetration of the skin by an acupuncture needle, strict needle safety protocols are observed and sterility of the equipment is always maintained.
